From Krakow, Poland we took a Flixbus to Budapest, Hungary. The trip is nearly 7 hours long (including rest breaks). The ride was actually quite smooth and mostly flat as it travels through the country of Slovakia.
The apartment we chose for the 4 nights in Budapest was away from the tourist attractions. The benefit was having a larger space to rest for a few days, but the disadvantage was having to take trams, buses, and the Metro for all of our sightseeing.
Public transportation in Budapest: this is a well-connected city (we never had to use a Bolt or taxi here). And it is a large city. We used the "Budapest GO" app for ticketless travel. The system is unique however in that you must validate via your phone each time you board.
Budapest. The city is beautiful with never-ending sights and things to do. While we'd love to see and do everything, we simply can't.
This is what we did one day that was completely manageable if you need a starting point (keep in mind this was in March and we saw almost no rain):

On our other days, we did go to a thermal bath (a "must-do" in Budapest), visited the Great Hall Market, Millenáris Park (for the seasonal cherry blossoms), and lazily wandered without purpose.
Everywhere we go, I think about whether or not our kids would like the city. We have 4 adult-children, all in their 20s, with different interests, tastes, and opinions. I honestly think all of them would be absolutely captivated by and impressed with Budapest.
